Apple Unveils iOS 27 at WWDC 2026: The Dawn of 'Siri AI' and the Liquid Glass Evolution

CUPERTINO, California — Apple officially kicked off its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2026) with a historic keynote that bridges the tech giant’s storied past with an AI-driven future. Marking the final WWDC keynote under Tim Cook’s 15-year tenure as CEO before John Ternus takes the helm this September, Apple delivered on its promise of a ground-up architectural shift, officially introducing iOS 27.

Rather than minor feature updates, iOS 27 redefines the iPhone experience through a radically rebuilt virtual assistant—now formally dubbed Siri AI—and an overhauled "Liquid Glass" user interface designed to give users unprecedented control over their screen aesthetics.

Siri AI: Built from the Ground Up

The absolute crown jewel of iOS 27 is the complete reconstruction of Siri. Moving away from the legacy system that has powered the assistant for over a decade, Apple has engineered an entirely new architecture for Siri AI, developed in a historic collaboration leveraging Google’s Gemini family of models.

Siri AI is no longer just a voice trigger; it now exists as a dedicated, system-wide application that syncs conversation history across iPhone, iPad, and Mac via iCloud.

On-Screen Awareness: Siri AI can actively read and comprehend what is happening on your device's screen. If you receive a text message about an upcoming dinner party, you can brainstorm recipes with Siri and have it directly drop the notes into the Reminders or Notes app without ever leaving the conversation.

Deep Personal Context: The assistant can tap into your cross-app data securely, pulling specific flight confirmation numbers buried in old emails or locating photos from a specific weekend trip based on vague contextual descriptions.

Continuous Conversations: Conversations flow naturally with full contextual memory, allowing you to ask complex follow-up questions without restarting the query.

Hardware Catch: Siri AI and the next generation of Apple Intelligence features will require an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model and newer to run the heavy on-device processing.

Liquid Glass Design Gets a User-Controlled 'Do-Over'

When Apple introduced the translucent, glassy "Liquid Glass" design language last year, it polarized users who loved the premium aesthetic but struggled with readability and glare. In iOS 27, Apple is answering that feedback directly.

The centerpiece of the UI overhaul is a new system-wide transparency slider. Located in the display settings, this slider allows users to dial the interface from fully opaque back to completely clear, adapting the refraction effects underneath app windows and notification panels to their liking.

Additionally, app icons have been re-sculpted with multi-layered depth, and sidebars now stretch completely to the edge of the screen to minimize visual clutter.

Advanced Parental Controls and Health Tracking

Beyond AI and aesthetics, Apple spent a significant portion of the WWDC keynote highlighting family safety and digital well-being. iOS 27 introduces robust upgrades to Screen Time and Communication Safety:

Category-Based Time Allowances: Parents can now set strict daily limits across broad categories like Social Media, Games, and Entertainment based on recommendations built alongside the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Advanced Content Blocking: Building on the existing automated nudity blurring, Communication Safety will now actively block gore and violent content in shared media for users under 18.

AirPods Customization: Audiophiles finally get a win with the introduction of system-wide equalizer (EQ) controls for AirPods, while the upcoming AirPods Pro 3 will gain the ability to sync heart rate data directly to the Fitness app via GymKit.

Device Compatibility: A Generous Window

In a surprising move that drew cheers from the developer crowd at Apple Park, Apple confirmed that iOS 27 will not drop support for any older devices. The software will run on everything from the brand-new flagship models all the way back to the iPhone 11 series released in 2019. However, users on older hardware should note that advanced Apple Intelligence features and Siri AI will be restricted due to processing limitations.

Availability

The developer beta of iOS 27 is live starting today, with a public beta scheduled to roll out in the coming weeks. The final, stable software build will launch globally this September alongside the reveal of the next-generation iPhone lineup.
